Camden received a small government grant for improvements to this large, single men’s hostel in central London. They approached Pedder & Scampton to see how the funds could best be spent. We interviewed the hostel management and established that a medical suite was badly needed, identified a suitable space and made plans for the conversion. This also gave us the opportunity to propose improvements to the courtyard to create a more inviting and flexible space for social activities. A small pavilion with sheltered seating now effectively divides the yard so different groups can use the space at the same time. Deep planters provide opportunities for gardening projects, bring more life and colour to the courtyard and provide greater privacy to the ground floor windows. Following the successful completion of this project, Pedder & Scampton was asked to prepare proposals for remodelling the whole building to provide better residential accommodation, improve secure circulation, and increase support and communal facilities. “I have no hesitation at all in recommending the practice. Gill was a pleasure to work with and produced interesting, well finished architectural and landscape solutions whilst being extremely aware of how to make the most of a small budget. The location required a sensitive approach to the client group and Pedder & Scampton worked extremely well in this environment.”Procurement Category Manager, Camden Procurement
