A Peabody Small Projects competition entry. The site was a long strip of land currently occupied by a series of garages along the back gardens of terraced houses in East London. The proposal for this small scale development was for a series of variously sized flats laid out at right angles to the existing urban grain. This arrangement allows each flat to have windows facing east and west over sunny entrance/garden courtyards entered from the street. The courtyard entry creates a buffer between the street and private homes, avoids overlooking and makes shared semi private external space for each unit.
