A new sensory room for the autism unit in a Haringey Primary School. We assisted selecting a suitable location within the unit that would be separate from the classrooms but easily accessible for staff and pupils when a situation arises. To meet a tight timeframe -- with construction to be undertaken and completed over the summer break -- a solution to meet the school’s brief needed to be established quickly. Appropriate robust construction and specialist fittings were specified and detailed within this very short period. Working in conjunction with school management, the Autism Unit teaching team, the term contractor and Haringey’s Capital Works project manager, P&S used their specialist knowledge to develop a brief, a design and specify fittings and finishes. The result will be a purpose designed room with tough cleanable materials, acoustic treatment, daylight control, variable lighting scenarios and specialist fittings for retreat and sensory activities for pupils.
